I have had to projects for my Fashion & Textiles course this year. The first project was to create a secret agent pocket involving my personal interests. The second project was to create a sleeve of a garment which involved my personal items that would represent as special value to me.

Project 1 - Secret Agent Pocket

Kickboxing is a hobby of mine and I thought this would be a good place to start. So I gathered information I could use to start my project.

Sketchbook Pages

 Throughout my sketchbook I experimented with different methods on how I could transfer an image onto a piece of fabric. I tried heat transfer by ironing on an image onto my fabric (pictures 1&2) then I also tried free machine embroidery on two of the images to see what effect it would give the transfer image. I tried the hot wax Batik (picture 4) which I dyed the fabric for 20 minutes for the wax to show up. I also tried Image Maker Transfer where I spread a thick paste on to an image and set it down on fabric for 15 minutes then applied water to make the image reappear (picture 4). I experimented with the screen print, I drew an image, placed it on a screen in order for me to spread ink through.

Project 2 - Wear your heart on your Sleeve

In this project I used items that were personal and held special value to me. I brought these into college in a little mesh bag. Items which included a necklace with my name on it, a bracelet I used to wear when I was a baby, rings from grandparents and great grandparents.

I photocopied my little mesh bag to see what experiments I could do with them before I started building my garment.
 My garment was made the materials organza and denim, organza for the front and back panel and denim to make the actual sleeve itself.

I tried free machine embroidery, screen print and combining both.

Printmaking

I threw a dart at the world map and it landed on Iraq, this was where my project started, research on Iraq. I started this by locating Iraq on a map and drawing out the continent the country it is based in.  I also located the Iraqi flag and the famous Golden Mosque which was blew up in 2007.

 

It seems the current affairs status focuses on war within Iraq,  I based it along these lines.  

In the picture below, I have used a transfer print where I placed strong white emulsion paint, placed an image on top for fifteen minutes which then I could peel the image back off and it would have printed on my page.

On my final information page about Iraq, I can created a view finder frame. I selected sections of my page to sketch from.

Drypoint Printing - I did this method by using a metal plate and a Drypoint nail to sketch an image which then I applied ink across the plate and used a scrub to get rid of the excess ink. I then placed this through an electric printing press which produced very good detail. 

Collagraph- I took a piece of cardboard which will be use to create a tank. I used different types of sticky tape to create levels of texture, I carved cardboard to make the wheels. I used sandpaper as the main body of the tank which created texture and shadows with all the colours I used.

Task: To create a trainer for a chosen target audience 

My target audience was a fellow student in my class, Charlotte Brookes. I did my research by obtaining the information about her in order to make the trainer. this was by asking questions such as; favourite sport, shape, movie and so on.  By this information I was able to make a sample trainer and make a poster involving all of Charlottes favourite things and personal to her.



With all the information I collated about Charlotte I was able to produce a postcard and magazine. Charlottes favourite shape is a star and favourite shop is Hollister, I combined the two to create a postcard.  By using Adobe InDesign, I created a magazine cover and a double page spread which explains my creation with Charlottes' likes and opinions plus added pictures of the poster up on a bus stop billboard accompanied with the image of the trainer itself.

Yellow Week

Using fruit and vegetables to create pieces of art

Printing - By using cardboard and string to create a base for print-making, used Acrylic paint mixed with Retardant to make a bright print.

After using different colours for printing then by using one of our prints we created a mixed media collage.

Mixed Media Collage - Containing pieces from mine and Sheena's  (classmate) work throughout the Yellow week. Also by using materials found in the classroom to give our piece more texture and colour.

Charcoal Room - The whole room was covered in paper, giving each student to have a space of their own to draw a range of fruit and vegetables. I chose to draw mushrooms and kumquats. By using charcoal I was able to smudge in detail to create a better effect and using darker charcoal shading for negative space.

Development throughout my Sketchbook - My artist research is where I get to explore how other photographers take photographs on urban landscapes. I researched artists such as Dan Clausen Hansen, Robert Fran, William Eggleston, Paul Raphelson and Jo Gane.

 Testing My Photographs - Test Strips where I would expose the photo paper for two seconds a time to see which was the correct exposure for each full photograph. Once I exposed my photo paper for the right amount of seconds I then tried out different developers to see how my image would turn out. Spray and Paint brush developer both have different resources to create effects on each image. I experimented with the Cyan toning to see how a Cyan colour would effect my image.

Yellow Week

November 2012

Yellow Week is a time where 1st Year, 2nd Year and Theatre Art students would come together and get given a task to do. This time round the task was to create a hybrid creature from three animals that were given. In my group a Bat, a Wasp and a Crab was selected for us to work with.

Initial Structuring - The initial making of the hybrid was using cardboard to create the structure of the main body whilst using black tape to attach the limbs for effect of the creature. 

The Main Features - The side arms and the tail which moved up and down. The eyes which were represent a wasp/fly eyes by using string, black tape was to make the bat wing look more realistic.
