Summer Project - Induction

August 2013

Brief: My summer project was to create a visual diary.

Activity 1 - Continuous drawings on two personal items. I decided to draw two mini, 'Me to You' picture frames and a mini pink locker. I had to redo one of my objects onto graph paper by using correct measurements as this was part of the criteria.

Activity 2 - To draw a map of somewhere I went. This is a map of the Fort Birmingham I went here to dine at Frankie and Benny's.

Activity 3 - I ripped two pages from a book and used a biro to try and create a sentence about my day out from the text on the page. Also to take one of the continuous line drawings from the previous task and add ink to display the shadows.

Activity 4 - To take photographs of someone doing a errand. I ended up taking photos of myself polishing around my house. I used masking tape to cover negative space.

Activity 5 - Was to take a photograph of a draw found in my house and then I chose three personal items from that draw. Sketch/draw or fine line and write details about them. As pictured above.

Activity 6 - Take an old photograph and place it in the original place and take a photograph of it. This was rare as this is the only picture I could find to do this activity with. I found my Year 6 Prom photo out side my Primary School.

Activity 7 - During one of the days every half an hour I had to write down what I was doing from the moment I got up to the moment I went to sleep. I had a very active day that day.

Drawing

June 2013

Throughout the course of the year my drawing sessions have been about natural forms, buildings and bones. Experimenting with pencil, biro, charcoal and collage these are a few examples of what I could accomplish.

Art History

June 2013

My Development throughout Contextual Studies

Throughout Art History/Contextual Studies I was learned about lots of different artist, styles and movements here are a few of my sketchbook pages displayed below.

I also had the opportunity to watch 21 minute Un Chien Andalou by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali. It was a short black and white Spanish film that did not make any sense to me but I suppose it was alright for 1929 and if I understood the Spanish culture.

Fine Art

May 2013

Two projects were produced the first, I was given an artist and an object and had to combine the two together, to create one end piece. The second project I had to put ideas together to create a work of art by using the Bauhaus as a starting point.

Project 1 - Artist: Tom Hunter

          - Object: Books

I researched Tom Hunter and discovered that he is an artist that takes old fashioned paintings and recreates them into a modern photograph. My initial idea was to take a random sentence from a book I had been given and recreate that into a photograph. I continued with idea as I progressed with this idea I was happy with the outcome also I was able to get some good quality photographs out of each sentence that I selected.

However I could not stay on idea throughout the whole project, I had to show that I could develop my ideas further so I decided to design and create a book with pages I ripped out and all the photographs along side them. I also created a stand made from plastic for the book to stand out and to make it more delicate than it actually was. I placed it on top of a light box to make my final piece more presentable.

Project 2 - Ideas

At first I was puzzled as I did not know how to go about starting this project. I was given the Bauhaus as a reference however I had the choice of not using it. I started to brainstorm in order to find some form of idea, this helped as I found a starting point! I brainstorm because this is a way of the start of my organisation and has some sort of form and structure.

For structure and form I researched artists such as Joseph Cornell and Joseph Grigley. Joseph Cornell would make wooden boxes and use objects he found to create a symbolism of a life in them, when I saw photographs of his boxes they looked very organised and I then knew for me that this was more of a starting point on after being inspired my Cornell. However Joseph Grigley would write down conversations he had during the day and put them up on a wall/notice board in an organised way, this was another idea I was willing to be inspired from but I preferred Cornell's way.

I found a wooden box at college and decided to put objects I could find around and took some photographs. I did go into the Grigley idea and record my conversations over the weekend and placed them into the box.

I went from conversation to photographs, family photographs. I found some old family portraits from the internet and out of books and started to experiment with them as well as just putting them in the box. I chose one photo in the end and picked a woman from that photograph and tried recreate what her life may have been like.

Still using the wooden box I found I was able to get items from around my home and place them into the box to create a life storage.

From this my final piece became like a evidence scene, it felt like I was tracking this persons every move. As if there had been a major incident in her life and I was trying to get every little detail.

Digital Manipulation

May 2013

 Animation

This is the first time I tried out animation using all the Adobe programs. I created a character who seems hyperactive but lacks  not much background history. This characters motions may be a little quick but taking up animation for six weeks was a new experience for me and I enjoyed it.

Creating the character- I sketched out a few little doodles of what his eyes and mouth could of been like.

Actual stages of my character, the sequence he will to move in.

Merchandise where would you find my character if to say he was sold as a big animation. On products such as t-shirts and pencil cases the average merchandise to be sold.

Typography

To find a meaningful or personal quote, by using typography I have to make that quote look as good as the quote itself. When I was back at school I drew Alice and the Mad-hatter and I knew when I found them again I could use these for this project. So I found a few quotes from Alice in Wonderland and by using the Adobe programs I found that I was able to use and create these quotes, below.

"Be careful of what you drink. All types of drink can affect your size and/or your judgment".  "Have I gone mad? I'm afraid so. You're extremely bonkers... But I'll  tell you a secret all the best people are."
