My Development of a Concertina Sketchbook

September 2012

First weeks of College - Induction Project
My first assignment was to develop a concertina sketchbook about me, my interests and my journey. My interpretation of the word journey to me at the time would be where I have traveled so far. As I am interested in travelling, I decided on to make a carved  cardboard cut out of a plane and placed it as it was flying through the page into the sunset, as displayed in the picture below. This symbolises my future. (This also was the 3-D Element of my project)

The Textiles element of my project was to symbolise the present, everything from left to right as shown below are spontaneous pieces which includes my interests and favourite things. By using free machine embroidery I was able to attempt to make a image of my surroundings. The zigzag stitching on the sewing machine was selected to maintain and hold everything in place. Then I screen printed a piece of text I had found earlier that day, produced a map of my way to college from home. To end the timeline I added my finger prints to prove it my own personal timeline.

To symbolise my past was the Visual Communication side of my project. I had taken a side profile photo of myself and turned that into text representing my past, displayed below. I answered certain questions like; What primary school did you go to? What is your most embarrassing moment?

The final piece was the Fine Art part of the project. In a group with three others, the task was to create a piece that involves past, present and future.  We as a group decided to create  timelines, one with patterns that replicates heartbeats when simulated on a heart monitor, the second is a big circle come spiral. The two timelines would represent the past and present, the circle would represent future as we do not know what the future holds.

My Final product of my Concertina Sketchbook!
